Well, diesel fuel and coal oil are not the same creature. Yup, I have heard that, and seen a lot of old-timers use it for that. Course, people used to eat turpentine mixed with lard too, for some reason or another. The only thing I could imagine it does is fix tissue at the site and cause for rapid sloughing of the dead flesh.
A friend once was silly enough to stick his finger over an injection port on a diesel engine while turning it over to see if it was spitting fuel. The fuel shot into his finger and he had to be treated by nearly the same procedure as one would endure following a snake bite. It was weeks before his finger healed. It required draining and debriding as if it were snake toxin.
