A coping saw is a hand held saw capable of making intricate cuts in wood. Where a band saw is a electrical saw with a continuous blade which rides on 2 wheels, also capable of making intricate cuts in wood, plastic's or metal. Now if you really want to make some different types of cut in wood. Like making different inlays or cutting out name plates ect. You would use a scroll saw.

of each saw. To help things a little bit, copy & paste the links into your browser
http://www.dickblick.com/zz349/33/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=6969
for a coping saw picture and
http://www.toolking.com/shop/index2.asp?parent=260
for the band saw. The vertical or up and down mounted saw shown in the pictures is the one we are talking about.
Hope this helps.
Nice descriptions Coyote!
