import/tax issue?

A fellow I know recently received a tax bill from the state for "importation of art" related to some African Safari mounts he had mounted in Canada some years back.

Has anyone ever heard of this or had any dealings w/this?

(incidently I have seen the mounts and they definately are not art!)

When you import a finished product into the USA , Canada, & other countries, you get charged a Duty.
The I think that Wildlife mounts are exempt but not sure.
It all has to do with Customs & who is on duty at the time the shippment is cleared.

all my stuff

All my stuff I get shipped to me up here in Canada has a duty incoming - even if Im not buying the stuff - like if someone sends me antlers to mold? I still have to pay a duty on the amount. I can claim this tax when I return the originals however. On the clients end - they have a duty for the reproductions I send back with the original as it is an out of country sale like RJ mentioned.
