Check this old deer head out on Ebay, item # 7132624087 ! Description says it has the original skull inside the mount. Question for some of the experts on here, how old would this head be?
How long ago did taxidermist still use the skull in a deer head mount?

You mean you are not supposed to do that?... I wondered why I kept burning up my dremel tools so often. I suppose the next thing your going to say is that you are not supposed to tan the eyeballs but use glass eyes, yah right!
But it is impossible to know exactly how old. J.W. Elwood was still selling the same old information giving the option of using original skulls when I took the cource circa 1969. They sold pre-made manikans since at least the teens of the last century but had not abandoned giving out the information on the old "2 by 4 into the skull" deer head mount built up with excelsior.
I agree with PA . I took that same course in 1969 and my first deer mount was with a 2 x 4 and the real skull and you think you guy's have it hard now . By the way , that head went right into the garbage . Rick
When i started that is the way we mounted deer heads real skull and excelsior necks. In Sout aMerica they still do it like that.
