Police are proud of 103 Taser-Related Deaths Since 2001

Submitted by Tim on 4/4/05 at 1:43 AM. ( )

This is a short cut and paste! But worth the read

There were 103 Taser stun gun-related deaths in the United States and Canada between June 2001 and March 2005, according to an Amnesty International report released Friday.

In the first three months of this year, there were 13 Taser-related deaths compared with six during the same period last year, the report said. Children and young adults are the main focus by police.

The stun guns have been touted as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people in high-risk situations, but Tasers have come under increasing scrutiny as a number of deaths have been blamed on the devices. Law enforcement enjoys using tasers.

"No confrontation is risk free. The Taser is the safest way to end violent confrontations for law enforcement," Taser International Inc. President Tom Smith said Thursday.

The report challenged Taser's claims that the stun guns have saved more than 6,000 lives. Which is a lie.

"Taser International wildly exaggerates the number of incidents in which the use of a Taser resulted in a life saved," the report says.

Smith contended that the company's statistics are conservative and based on fact. They do not count a death. It is all about profits.

Stun guns produced by Scottsdale-based Taser are used by more than 6,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide.

As long as Police "get their man" it does not matter! Killing is part of the job!

bad things do happen, where did you get those "quotes" you know the ones.
"children & young adults are the main focus"
"killing is part of the job"
"law enforcement enjoys using tasers"
i have worked in a prison for the last 23 years, we need to use things from time to time besides our hands. the inmates almost always do and they dont bother to tell you ahead of time, that you are their next target.
Police officers are being killed daily while trying to protect your sorry ass, go to www.policeone.com and read about the many police officers who are killed on a daily basis around this country, its a hell of a lot more than the bad guys who really deserve it.
the next time we have a disturbance which will probably be this week (given the averages) i would like to call you before we respond and actually have you show us how to handle it, you can go in first.
i'll watch, i actually enjoy training.
it saves lives, mine included.

It IS NOT worth the read!

I agree with MarK & Michael. Take your anti-law enforcement attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine

Taser needs to go back to drawing board

This response submitted by - on 4/4/05 at 7:42 AM. ( )

doesn't work right--is too imperfect. Many law enforcement won't use it.

This response submitted by Tim (a different Tim) on 4/4/05 at 8:52 AM. ( )

Nice try Tim. There is absolutely ZERO proof that tasers kill.
Any deaths that have occurred after someone was tasered have been because the guy was wacked out on drugs (like coke or heroin).
I was tasered as part of my training and so were 30 other officers.
No one suffered any ill effects, but none of us were on coke either.

Lets go back to just using pistols!

This response submitted by Pirate on 4/4/05 at 9:48 AM. ( )

Most occassions when someone is shot with a taser the police would also have the right to use their duty weapon. With that in mind how many people is the Taser saving. This is a very effective tool for police departments. My department is currently going through the planning stages on how to implement the taser department wide. I guess the people that don't like taser would be happier if we went back to beating people with night sticks ans shooting them with real guns. Thats ok if thats what they want. Its one or the other.

You fake posters! Get a life "Officers". WHAT A LAUGH

This response submitted by Tim on 4/4/05 at 11:58 AM. ( )

A REAL PROFESSIONAL Officer would not post on this forum. If they did, there is a serious question to their credit and frame of mind. What loosers!

After reading the posts, WHY are there so MANY "OFFICERS" that post on a taxidermy forum? Is it because they are fakes, or wannabes? Is it because "they" are unfit for what they do or did? Tell us the truth please.

Strange, your job does not keep you so busy as you say. A prison guatd? Not qualified for anything else? The scum of the SERVICE industry.

25 deaths a year seems pretty good to me....

This response submitted by Griz on 4/4/05 at 1:34 PM. ( )

I bet there are more people that die from lightning or nail guns or even accidental self inflicted pencil wounds. I say less than .08 deaths per day is a good thing. And they SHOULD be proud of that.

Hey Tim I guess you've been shocked before!

This response submitted by Pirate on 4/4/05 at 2:31 PM. ( )

I've been a police officer for 15 years and I'm also a part-time taxidermist. The title police officer is my job not who I am. I have many interest. I also own a sporting goods store that is open seven days a week. From your post it looks like you have something against the police. Maybe you fall into the catagory of the criminals who gets shocked. First off, of all of the stuff that is put onto this site it was your original comments that don't belong. Maybe you need to go find a 4th amendment site to go cry on. From the post that I normally read on here most of the people are law abiding and religious. I would think that it is your type that don't belong on this site.

Idon't see a problem.....

This response submitted by Gary on 4/4/05 at 2:59 PM. ( sandstonejunkie@yahoo.com )

Go participate in the ride-along program with you local police department and walk in thier shoes for a while, get a job at a maximum security prison and see what these people act like. After working for the past 10.5 years in a max. security prison I have seen a "few" people shot by the taser, it is another tool for law enforcment/security personel to use. At the institution I am from you have to be shot by it in order to be qualified to use it. Yes, it will knock your socks off, it was alot easier to get over than the pepper spray. This weapon is a less-than-lethal instrument but sometimes bad things happen. The big question is what percentage of the number of people shot by the taser that could have been shot by the police/security personel using a 40cal. handgun and what percent of them would be dead? As for people being a fake or wannabe since they are posting on here, you must have fell and hit your head! Have you ever heard of off duty, days off, vacation days? Your are just upset because we are not wanting to join your hug-a-thug march for rights. Best thing I can say is don't break the law or get sent to prison.

Something nice to make you feel better!

This response submitted by Tim Are you happy now? on 4/4/05 at 3:29 PM. ( )

Policemen are not all perfect, but this cop comes close to winning the ingenuity award. What would you have done?

A driver did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman behind him went ballistic, pounding on her horn and screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to drive through the intersection with him.

Still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm awfully sorry for this mistake.

You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping the guy off in front of
you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would
Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated
Christian fish emblem on the trunk."

"Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car."

Responsible professional police?

This response submitted by Withheld on 4/4/05 at 3:32 PM. ( )

For those of you who think that just because someone is a police are they are responsible and honest? And for the guy who says go on a ride along and see what Police are like? Well think again. The last time I went to the police on my own initative, having done nothing wrong, having never had a ticket, never, just wanted to ask a very simple question not related to taxidermy, those law abiding, honest, poor police followed me home, followed me into my shop and decided to check my taxidermy records for the first time in 30 years. Had I not went to them to visit and ask a simple question they would not have visited me. Did not get a citation of any kind during the 3 hour suprize visit on Sunday evening. All I got was a serious wake up call as to what cops can really be like. I surley would not want to be on the wrong side of a tazer with my local cops. I use to have high regard for cops.

Police want a "police state" for control!

This response submitted by Tim on 4/4/05 at 3:59 PM. ( )

What in the world do "POLICE" have the right to check you out on things they are obviously NOT qualified to do?

People think and are constantly told that the POLICE are the keepers of your life and you MUST give them your devotion and respect and support because without them, all of us poor citizens would die from the bad guys!

Isn't that stupid! Most Police are under edcuated anyway. The smart people don't want the control and puffed up ego that goes with the thankless monkey job. Most people can work out problems without the "MAN" sticking their nose where it don't belong just to excerise POWER over the people.

The police in this country can't wait until a "POLICE STATE" exists.

Then all of us will suffer!

Okay Tim

This response submitted by Michael Sestak on 4/4/05 at 4:23 PM. ( )

as a "prison Guard" you are right i do watch SCUM, i am a "babysitter" for adults who never bothered to grow up and take control of their own life, learning to be responsible for their own actions.
instead they just wobble thru life blaming everyone for their problems.
when the police show up these individuals decide that the police cant tell them what to do.
they also decide that they can do what ever they want right in front of the police, even fight with them.
then when the defication hits the rotating oscillator, they start screaming about how their rights are being violated, how brutal the police are,of course this only happens if they are losing the fight, if the officer is losing the fight the bad guy just laughs about it, all the time the individual was the one who actually started assaulting the officer in the first place.
as far as not being "busy" i guess we are just as busy as you.
i am also going to make a guess that you once were arrested or spent time in prison.
and perhaps i should also assume that since you are not too "busy" as you have the time to post an argument here based on factless drivel, i must assume that you might be a welfare recipient with too much time on your hands as you may or may not have a job.
but i do not want to insult the folks who actually need public assistance.
you see i have dealt with your kind for a long, long time and nothing we can say or do will ever change your mind about what the police go thru on a daily basis trying to save lives and go home safely to their children.
some folks think that police dont have the God given right to defend themselves, police do not have to play fairly, they just have to follow the law when they do, and they do it well.
may God bless those folks who patrol our streets in an effort to keep us safe each and every day, may God bless those folks who run into burning buildings to save those who need it, i know i wouldnt want to.
i was once asked a question, it went something like this:
what would you take to a gun fight?
answer: a gun
what would you take to a knife fight?
answer: a knife...NO... i would take a gun.
you see, i have the right to go home safely every night and if some individual decides that they have the right to "TRY" and take my life or "TRY" to seriously hurt me.. i am going to do EVERYTHING thats legal to make damn sure they lose...and they will.
Tim, i wish you the best, have fun.
Mr. Withheld,
since when does the local police department have the right to inspect you for taxidermy violations?
it just doesnt make sense that they would "just" decide to follow you home, invite themselves in, with out a warrant and search your home / business. somethings missing.

This response submitted by Gary on 4/4/05 at 4:36 PM. ( )

You are one of these people that bash the police but let something happen to you and you would be calling them yelling HELP! I now that there are bad apples in every bunch, but to believe all are bad is pure ignorance. One of the reasons people want to be involved in law enforcement is to protect people which does involve control. What do you want? A bunch of Barney Fife with one bullet out there, that would sure scare the hell out of the criminals!Wake up and look at the statistics of people in prison, over 80% are in here due to drugs and/or alcohol, You think it is a cake walk, not hardly. One of the reasons that people with an education are not a cop is due to pay, Go out in the streets and fight crime and deal with these people for 40+ hours a week for under 25 grand a year starting out. How safe do you really think you would be if there wasn't any law enforcement? How safe would your family really be? From your attitude it seems that maybe you are a criminal who might have been shot by a taser, If you are I hope that one of those people with the "monkey job" catch up to you. If you want, go to some of the middle eastern countrys and see how they are, then cry a little! As for "name withheld" it is bad to hear that you went through that for only asking a question, I hope you don't have to go through that again.

Ignorance is your way of life, too bad!

This response submitted by Tim on 4/4/05 at 5:05 PM. ( )

Well, people! Ignorance is bliss and some of you are in dream land.
Wake up! If you think the SUN rises and sets on the butts of the police, you really are foolish. Police will sacrifice you to meet their quota given to them by their handlers. Simple yes men and woman with guns.

Police never do anything wrong?
Police would never misuse power?
Police would never shoot someone unless they had to?
Police are never corrupt?
Police are always right?
Police are a gift to the freedoms of people?
Police support your freedom and rights?
Police will help you out and not expect a bonus?
Police will protect you?

What silly fools many of you are to believe the POLICE are some gift from God.

Not all true....

This response submitted by FIVE-O on 4/4/05 at 5:12 PM. ( )

I happen to be a real law enforcement officer. I have not used the taser on anyone other than training, however I have scene it in action on three occations. The first was very ineffective because the suspect was under the influence of crack cocaine. I'm sure if the suspect was-one on one-with any officer the officer would have transitioned to deadly force(hand gun). This is where some of the stats of death are coming from. Antime an officer uses the taser and death resaults it is recorded as a death because of the taser. NOT always the case. I can't speak for all Law Enforcement Officers but we are not trained killers...we are trained life savers that have to take drastic actions at times to save others and ourselves. You must first walk a mile in our shoes.......

Tim You Think Tasers are bad!

This response submitted by Dr. Red Duke on 4/4/05 at 6:00 PM. ( )

I'll take a taser shock anyday compared to an uneccessary operation!

Even more significantly, the medical system has played a large role in undermining the health of Americans. According to several research studies in the last decade, a total of 225,000 Americans per year have died as a result of their medical treatments:

12,000 deaths per year due to unnecessary surgery
7000 deaths per year due to medication errors in hospitals

20,000 deaths per year due to other errors in hospitals

80,000 deaths per year due to infections in hospitals

106,000 deaths per year due to negative effects of drugs

Thus, America's healthcare-system-induced deaths are the third leading cause of the death in the U.S., after heart disease and cancer.

One of the key problems of the U.S. health system is that as many as 40 million people in the U.S. do not have access to healthcare. The social and economic inequalities that are an integral part of American society are mirrored in the inequality of access to the health care system. Essentially, families of low socioeconomic status are cut off from receiving a decent level of health care.
By citing these statistics, Starfield (2000) highlights the need to examine the type of health care provided to the U.S. population. The traditional medical paradigm that emphasizes the use of prescription medicine and medical treatment has not only failed to improve the health of Americans, but also led to the decline in the overall well-being of Americans. Starfield's (2000) comparison of the medical systems of Japan and the U.S. captures the fundamental differences in the treatment approach. Unlike the U.S., Japan has the healthiest population among the industrialized nations. Instead of relying on sophisticated technology and professional personnel for medical treatment as in the U.S., Japan uses its technology solely for diagnostic purposes. Furthermore, in Japan, family members, rather than hospital staff, are involved in caring for the patients.

The success of the Japanese medical system testifies to the dire need for Americans to alter their philosophical approach towards health and treatment. In the blind reliance on drugs, surgery, technology and medical establishments, the American medical system has inflicted more harm than good on the U.S. population. Starfield's (2000) article is invaluable in unveiling the catastrophic effects of the medical treatments provided to the American people. In order to improve the medical system, American policymakers and the medical establishment need to adopt a comprehensive approach and critically examine the failure of the richest country in the world to provide decent health care for its people. The reason that they have difficulty doing that is explained on the following page.

Starfield, B. (2000, July 26). Is US health really the best in the world? Journal of the American Medical Association, 284(4), 483-485. Obtain full reprint.

If you don't like your job, get a different one. That is the only way YOU will save lives. MAKE yourselves responsible for your own actions and don't hide behind a badge!

Tim, I do find you very funny and brave behind the computor screen. I don't have the luxory to hide, because its my job to be on the front line of the world. Yes, I was also one of those Army guy's from the first Gulf war that allowed you to be free and have your opinion. I do respect your opinion however I don't agree with it. I agree to disagree.

Fact...on average every 54 hours in the U.S. a law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty. You can do the research on this topic. Its all there at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. I've visited it unfortunately because one of my friends died protecting you. I'm sorry you feel the way you do about the Police....DAN CATLIN, PROUD to not hide behind the BADGE!

With nut cases like Tim running around, if I was a police officer I would be armed to the teeth. Come to think of it people like you Tim, are probably the number one reason tasers were inviented in the first place. Walking around out there unsupervised with a giant ant-humanity-police officer chip on your shoulder just waiting for an excuse to blow up into road rage or some other form of hysteria.

Neglecting to take your medication, putting the rest of us at risk of being attacked by you when your inner demons escape from the control exerted by the medication you refuse to take.

Then some liberal makes us use a taser on you instead of just blowing you away and solving the problem once and for all.

Then in a fit of self-induced rage, you kill some innocent young police officer who had no idea he was pulling over a psychopath for an expired license tag. Leaving his wife and children with no support or choice other than to sue the psychiatrist who let you out of the funny farm to begin with.

Note Tim: Sentence ending with a preposition. Doesn't that just drive you crazy?

Not for tim
