i get back from vacation and low and behold my chest freezer miraculously had been unplugged. i dont even know if anything is salvageable. everything was completely thawed.

I've never lost a freezer, but if it's chock-full of frozen critters and kept closed, I would suspect it would take 2-3 days before everything was thawed out. Assuming the freezer is kept indoors at room temperature. If it's kept in a garage that could get pretty hot, then obviously things would thaw out quicker.
Only one way to find out if your stuff is any good and that's to open up a couple things...
