What to do about those telemarketers. I need HELP!

Submitted by Evelyn on 8/18/06 at 1:49 PM. ( ) 64.12.117.13

For the past few days I have had a big time problem with telemarketers calling, especially mainstream.com. Not only do they don't take a "no, don't call anymore, take us off your list" for an answer, but they called back five, yes FIVE times, within the next 10 minutes. No matter how much I cussed at them, threatened them with the Better Business Bureau and a lawsuit, they called back less then a minute later. Now this morning, guess what, they called again.

I am at my ends wits. What can I do about this? I traced their number and they are calling from Las Vegas. I called that number, but of course there was no answer. Any advice would be great. Not answering my phone is not an option since I do need to talk to customers. Plus I shouldn't be afraid to answer my damn phone.

This is what we did

We have caller ID...as most of us do. We enacted an option to block anyones call that does not identify itself. Bingo...calls not stopped but drastically reduced...from maybe 10 a day to 2 a week now...and if those call back...I just hold down the # symbol.

Got a large caliber

you can fire next to the receiver? Just lay the phone down and not talk to them? Give them Cecil's number?(Just kidding Cecil) SOMEWHERE I've got a list of fun things to do to telemarketers, but it's burried somewhere in those 2731 items in my "IN BOX"...

Buy their product!, Just Kidding!

Are you sure they are telemarketers? Sounds like a good "anti" strategy to harrass. Have you called the authorities? If you have traced their number it would be a good place to start.

answer it

This response submitted by Mr.T on 8/18/06 at 2:01 PM. ( ) 68.79.167.32

If it is a recording, press the # button repedietly, and it will take your number out of their system, sometimes. If it is a live person on the other end, break in and ask them for their home phone number.
Or, if they ask,,,how are you today,,, tell them, make it so long and bad that they have to set there and listen to you telling them you medical history and family problems. Talk about anything but what they got for sale. They did ask for it.

Compressed Air Horns

This response submitted by Jeff on 8/18/06 at 2:36 PM. ( ) 209.193.42.7

If they continue to call after being asked to take your # off their list give them a shot from a compressed air horn (the kind used on boats). They won't have a problem putting your name on their do not call list.

That the same "company"

This response submitted by Becky P on 8/18/06 at 2:45 PM. ( ) 152.163.100.71

that called me twice yesterday and once today. I do have caller ID. I didn't get the first number because I was online and with my set-up, it doesn't show. But the next two times were different numbers from different area codes. I'll have to go back and check them to see where they originated from. They were said something about search engine rankings or some bs that I wasn't interseted in. Supposedly they took my number off their list now. We will see. I'm also on the do not call list, my home number and business number are the same. BP

Dang

should have proof-read. Oh, well, goes with the rest of the day. Sorry.

Evelyn,

This response submitted by Becky P on 8/18/06 at 3:06 PM. ( ) 152.163.100.71

if you go to their website, it says they are in New Hampshire. One of the numbers I was called from came from Buffalo, NY, the other came from Las Vegas. BP

Put them on hold

This response submitted by Zeb on 8/18/06 at 3:24 PM. ( ) 65.143.8.141

Here's what I do. I let them start their talk and say "Can you hold on a minute, I have a customer". I let them hold a couple minutes and come back and tell them to start again. I let them get going again and put then remarkably I have another customer, and then another (busy day!). After the 3rd time they hang up theirself and usually don't call back. If you waste their time, they will move on eventually.

Yelling at them just fuels the fire and they won't take you off the list no matter what they say.

We have a feature up here that can be added to the line which is called "telemarketer do not disturb".
Any caller gets a message up front saying that if they are a telemarketer, to hang up. If they are not a telemarketer, press 1, and the call then comes through to you.
If a telemarketer decides to use option "1" to get through, then you have a base for a lawsuit.

Just My two cents

Hand the phone to your two or three year old if there is one around. My three year old granddaughter would love to talk to them.

Hey Crusty

Thanks guys

This response submitted by Evelyn on 8/18/06 at 5:29 PM. ( ) 64.12.116.73

some of your suggestions are pretty darn funny. I do have a big cowbell laying around I use during the winter olympics (yeah yeah I know, I'm strange, but hey I'm from Europe). That cowbell ought to get their attention. I did put my number on the National Do Not Call list this afternoon. Suppose to be active for 5 years. If they call I can file an official complaint. We'll see. If this fails, hey I always have the cowbells, plus I can tell them in very minute detail on how to skin a snake over the phone, give them yodeling lessons, and challenge them to a fun game of counting backwards in increments of 9 starting at 100.

Cecil's alright

This response submitted by Crusty on 8/18/06 at 6:03 PM. ( ) 209.165.183.15

As someone stated above, you need to get on the National Do Not Call Registry,1-888-382-1222.I registered 3 years ago when it first started and it has been a godsend. It won't stop non profit groups or those that you have done business with but it really stops the bulk of them.It is really easy to do.I think it takes 60 days to go into affect after you register.Do yourself a favor.I'm sure there's a way to do it on line also.

They don't have

This response submitted by Zeb on 8/18/06 at 8:52 PM. ( ) 65.143.8.77

honor the do not call list if you are a business. I have already tried to file a complaint and that is what the FCC told me. Business' have no rights in this matter. The do not call list is only for residential listings. Time is money, just waste their time.

auto dialers

This response submitted by Mr.T on 8/18/06 at 10:15 PM. ( ) 68.79.167.32

they have computers to auto dial several numbers at once, this way they personaly did not call you. That is hww they get around the do not call rule. They have a computer dial you.

These are different callers

This response submitted by Cecil 64.184.41.234 on 8/19/06 at 9:04 AM. ( ) 64.184.42.8

representing the same company so if you harass them you just have to do it to a different person next time. Doesn't Texas have a no call list? Oh wait... that's Dumbya state isn't it, which means anything that nixes big business is a no no. He made it hard for me to sell fish to Texans to protect Texas businesses while he was govenor. Another example of where he says he says he's for free trade but he's really not.

Seems to me I saw something on one of those news programs that says there's a federal law that if they call you more than once after you've told them not to you can take them to small clams court and collect $500.00.

Auto Dialers

This response submitted by Jim B on 8/19/06 at 12:36 PM. ( ) 152.163.100.71

The auto dialers are not exempt from the Do Not Call Registry.

I registered on line when the do not call list came out

talk to them

This response submitted by ss on 8/21/06 at 3:04 AM. ( ) 216.221.108.36

i keep them on the phone as long as i can, dont ever buy just ask the same questions over and over again, and some times they have to get there superviser to answer some that i think of... if a guy just hangs up they get a new call every 10 seconds...(thats what they want you to do if your not going to buy) i can talk and work at the same time with my head set.. it really waste's there time..like 20 mins. sometimes. and they sometimes hang up on me.. ha ha i should start recording some.. i love the place with the hats out of texas...

TELEMARKETERS

This response submitted by D. FRANK on 8/24/06 at 9:27 PM. ( ) 152.163.100.71

You can usually tell it's a telemarker when there is a two or three second pause between when you say hello and someone in India says "Hawoo, es dis mista fank". At that point I just start saying Hello..., Hello..., Hello, then I pull the phone away a foot or two from my mouth and say "I don't know who it was, I couldn't hear anything". Then I just hang up. Rarely do they call back. If so I repeat the process and they never call back a third time. Works for me and is more fun than just hanging up.
