Unless I'm doing something wrong, I want to bring it to everyone's attention that sometime's searching the archives and finding information does take quite a bit of effort. Typically a month's worth of info in the topic related to your search comes up. And you have to search the title's of each post to (hopefully) find the post you're looking for. Then, you need to read through that post to find the exact info you're looking for. Sometime's the info you're looking for is buried in a topic whose title doesn't always sound like your info would be in there. Sometime's it's pretty easy to find. Othertimes it's not. It would be nice if your initial search was a direct link to the exact post. But apparently the one month deal is only feasible (Unless I"m doing something wrong?)
I'm not complaining, I just wanted to point this out. If a new postee tries to locate something and can't find things, maybe we should be a little more patient in the future...

It is that way for everything in life Marty, it is so much better that we have the Internet and search engines with so much information. The world is at your keyboard. It takes allot of digging to find the good stuff. Even when asking face to face with someone, you have to sort through some bs to get what you need. Not finding what you need today with the www in your lap is lame. Time is all it takes as you just said. Not finding what they need is not spending the time to look for it. Or not using the right key words. Nobody did my homework in school for me. Beginners need hints for proper keywords, in a nice way. Train them to search, and the less pictures you have to draw.
when I was in graduate school, you found a book or journal article on a particular subject; then you went to the "literature cited" section at the end of each article, and perused through all the sources trying to find something current on your topic. There were computer searches available, I think they were done overnight, and the "printed" search could be picked up the next day. You just prayed that some relevant articles would be in English rather than German, French, Italian, or whatever. We got a lot of exercise running back and forth from the card catalog to the "stacks", where all archived data was stored. In the "Information Age", we have totally lost the concept of where information came from, and the amount of effort it took for it to become available to us.
There is an art to seeking and finding information. No perfect method is available to find exactly what we are looking for in any dicipline, taxidermy included.
And patience but thats why i browse through the archs even when i dont need something - right now.
But - imagine having to do all that sorting when the terms and names of the same items are totally different in your country!
You guys are so lucky, appreciate it.
Now - to try and find info on an 'outward' corner mount!
lol.
...IF there's information to be found on the internet, I can find it. Which means others should be able to do so as well with a little effort. All I'm saying is that it is possible to spend a lot more time trying to find an obscure topic than it would be to simply make a post sometimes. Plus, a beginner may not even know what something is called to begin a search (let alone what samantha has just brought up too). Simple stuff with 900,000 hits, there's no excuse. But some things could take considerably longer...
must have slept in thismorning! lol
sorry george i see your working your way down the posts.
the results of searches also Marty. I have never figured out the sort order...is it from most recent to most ancient? Is it alphabetical? If so, by topic, or author? Please do not think I was criticizing your post, just reminiscing about how terrible things once were to find references. There is always room for improvement.
Being new on here I can assure you I have spent countless hours using that orange button. And when I do ask a question I still get told click the orange button... Its just assumed that the person asking wouldnt think to look thru the archives.. SO I wait patiently to get an answer and what do I get? "CLick the orange button"..Thanks that is just so helpful... Nothing like being frustrated from searching for hours then finally posting the question only to get a reply like that when the person posting such a reply could probably easily just say oh its such and such.. Then THAT would be something someone else could find when searching archives...
What is soo dang irrittating is that it will pull up posts that only link you to a section of posts. Meaning sometime in that 24 hour period someone mentioned the word your looking for and it doesnt tell you WHICH post it is. BY the time you go thru all the posts you forgot what you were loking for...Then you do find it and what is the reply? Click the orange button...To weed thru all the click the orange button replies can be a real PITA. Is there an easier way to use that search button to actualy get answers? I searched for something the other day and it came up with 4 hits.. All of which said use the orange button. Not one single one answered the dang question...
I know how silly sounding some questions can be when you yourself have done it about 10 million times. But to a newbie its their first time... Not to mention not everyone is computer literate. I know I for one being a newbie to taxidermy would really appreciate less negative comments and more helpful answers. SOmeone told me I should slow down, go to school, look in the archives (been there done that), one guy even said I shouldnt be in taxidermy if I dont know what IM doing... LIke Apparently that person was born with the knowledge? I have even received an email from someone who said I shouldnt ask questions. THAT one cracked me up.
Dont get me wrong sometimes I get some very helpful answers. And Ive meet some very nice people. But I swear I am so tired of being told about that stupid orange button... If it actually answered my questions without 500 "Orange button responses" Id probably really like that feature.
Rae <-- who has developed a hate for the color orange LOL...
I have to admit that your conclusions are correct. You CAN spend all day there looking for the specific information you need, but have any of you bothered to think the OTHER WAY? Just how many STUPID QUESTIONS were asked about that same topic? Had those dozens of lazy people read the opening page and followed the directions the first time, there would be no, "use the orange SEARCH icon". But NO! We have a generation of gasoline asses here who want what they want when they want it as long as it's immediately.
A simple "yes" or "no" answer is easy enough, but many of the answers require significant time to type in. Why should I bother? Sure, I know the answer, but does that obligate me to spoon feed you? I don't get paid for this and for anyone to DEMAND that I "just answer the question" is already pushing my buttons. Maybe instead of directed people to the SEARCH I should type in "Asked and answered". Would that make you feel better? And "NO" I wasn't born with all the answers. I paid dearly for them and I CHOOSE to give them out freely. But again, I know and it's my CHOICE. Anymore, I just ignore the question, because not to invites the same crap I heard yesterday when the guy wanted to know exactly what borax was. He was just too damned lazy to look it up and I should've just ignored him completely. Otherwise, it's ME who's the bad guy.
In fact, I thought you maintained your patience quite well! THOSE are the types of questions that warrant either a "seek the orange button" response OR no reponse at all IMO. These people are simply lazy and they will learn far MORE about life by NOT handing them something on a silver platter than the miniscule tidbit of information that they're NOT looking for. Those are NOT the types of questions I'm talking about.
And, my statement also was not directed at anybody in particular. I just wanted to let everybody know that SOMETIME'S our archives are not very efficient. I RARELY search the orange button. But when I do it's usually a fairly obscure topic that I'm searching for - after all, I already know EVERYTHING - lol! (Just a joke folks, no comments needed from the peanut gallery). So, I'm just pointing this out to give a head's up to the regulars that may have not known that sometime's the orange button isn't "all that"...
Why in the world are you reacting like someone attacked you? This topic never even pointed a finger at any particular person except at that dang orange button. and the countless posts that it brings up that basically directs you to more "click the orange button" replies.
It wasnt you who emailed me about not being a taxidermist because I didnt know anything --so why are you acting so offended? I KNOW you have alot of experience, I never said you didnt work hard to get it. I am working just as hard to get experience too. SO dont knock me or anyone else for trying to learn... ASking questions and studying archives is what this site is for.
Why do you feel that if someone posts a question or comment that it is always directed at YOU? I thought this forum was full of all levels of taxidermists? meaning anyone who wishes to give advice can post.. I dont think I have ever seen a post yet that demanded an answer from anyone... Or from you in particular.
Do you realize that this forum is the FIRST forum listed when someone does an internet search for Taxidermy? the rest of the hits are mostly people advertising their business. People who are searching the internet for answers on doing taxidermy are directed here.
I found this site thru a search when I needed to find more information. And I have found some great info and what I havent been able to find some people have been very helpful including YOU by answering my questions.
And I again stress I dont know why you feel that my post was directed at you because it wasnt. I own 3 web groups, and moderate on 2 more. I know how groups work.. It can be frustrating, seeing the same questions over and over again... But THAT is where people skills and being helpful come into play. Just because someone says something in general doesnt mean it is a direct attack on you. If I dont want to answer something on my own group I dont have to.. Just because I own it doesnt mean I have to reply to ever single post. And if YOU dont want to answer a question on this group YOU dont have to either..
For the record if I ever direct something at YOU I will post your name so that you will know IM talking about you or to you. THEN if you want to get offended by all means at least youll have a good reason.
Now-- I am going to go back to searching thru the million archives... I hope you have a good day.
Rae
every post weather made in General or not is directed at those who regularly post. When George speaks of learning from the school of hard Knocks. But offering the knowledge freely to others. He is often expressing the sentiments of many of those who do. I do realize you may be a beginner, or newbe here. And or to the field of Taxidermy. what your lack of long term participation here does not account for. Is the knowledgeable taxidermist who no longer participate here because of the impetuous nature of the "ME" generation. Those who ask questions and expect to get what they want, when they want it, and delivered in a package that is not only attractive, But tasty. Those who insult and ridicule. when someone has an opinion, personality, or demeanor that differs from Their perception of how things should be. and especially those who think they are entitled to something simply by being. Yes Rae read the archives, filter out the quality information and absorb it. But also take the time to see who left it there and how many time they have answered the same question. The archives are full of crap too. Stop and think haw many times your above posts will be read. was your initial post necessary? who will it help in the future?
Yes, George often lays it out point blank, some can not handle that. but he still offers info for all. I personally have become so disgusted with the ingrates that come here, I rarely offer my advice. Today you are a beginner. tomorrow you will be telling those who gave you the info they do not know what they are talking about. if you really want Georges softer side. ask your question in the beginners category. I cannot recall him ever blasting a beginner in there. When you post in the industry category. you are running with the big dogs, and they not only bark, occasionally they bite. enjoy what you learn here. it truly is a gift.
