Dear Scott, When I do a bear rug I dye the flanks after it is mounted and dried. Some may do it different but this works for me. Good luck, Mark

It's called Flank dye. Get the color to match the hide your doing. I would suggest you do this outside beong it will smell up the place. Also make sure you do the edges of the hide.

Bear Flanks

I did a lot of bear rugs before I retired from taxidermy. I preferred to use Lifetone skin dye applied with an airbrush to the flesh side of the hide and edges after the hide had been stretched, dried and made symetrical. The dye will penetrate the hide through to the hair side. Make sure the hide is dry prior to application. On exceptionally thick hides, it may be necessary to apply the hide to the hair side. If you do, wait until the dye is dry, then wipe with a clean cloth to remove excess dye from the hair. Although I didn't use it, some people prefer Fab Spray dye which comes in an aerosol can.
