Green Stink

Strange question. I recently skinned a freshly killed, male coyote, and around the stomache area was the worst smelling green flesh I have ever encountered. Is this normal and if so what is it. Also, what if anything do I need to do the area. I have fleshed the terrible smelling meat away and salted it. Do I need to do anything else.

Normal

Especially in predators. This is what happens when an animal dies. The gastric acids have no food to process, so they begin to process the host. In laymans language, they rot (gangrene). This makes skinning them quickly imperative as the hair will slip in these spots first. You'd better use a good acid pickle or you're going to have a bald bellied coyote.

2 options

You really have 2 options at this time, the smell is from bacteria. form intestinal fluid. This seem to happen quit often on coyote. the skin itself is probably green and stained that way. Is the hair loose at all? If so, I would let it dry hard then rehydrate. If the hair is not loose I would salt for a few hours then rehydrate in a 5gal solution of: 5gal water,5oz bascal-s 2cups salt,1oz dawn dish soap,1oz blood eater, and 1/2oz basacryl-nb,ku this solution will help keep the fur tight and due a good job of cleaning the fur. let soak about a 1/2hour or till mostly rehydrated.then rinse. I use an old washing machine. I place the animal in the washer and spin out the rehydrating solution then fill with clean cold water. Let rinse for about 3 min, then spin out. next I place in my formic acid salt solution. a lot of taxidermist will say let it dry out hard no matter what. I fine that the sooner you get rid of bacteria the better! just my opinion.

This is where the AUTO-TANNER really shines.

I trap and call alot of animals, I am just like you, sometimes I dont have the time to skin them and yes I let them lay around a day or so.

Well when Steve told me this would save a green hide, I though "yea, right." People I am here to tell you, IT WILL!! I can toss a green bellied hide in the tanner and it fixes the problem with in 2 hours, I will turn the lips and ears after I run it thru the tanner. If nothing else get a old paint pot and pressurize it with the crystals and turn it around and upside down. Other wise you have your work cut out for you. John C

I had one

I did a lot of research on them and bought one, sold it a week later. I lost $200.00 on it. Not to say they don't work, I just feel I get a much better tan with The old fashion way of lutan-f and formic acid. I like doing tests, I keep my Sundays open just to find new methods and try new things, even if I have something that does work I look for something better. If ya like auto tanners great. Its just my test showed that I had less shrinkage and a better tan the old way. many people will disagree and that's fine. however they may not tan the way I do. waxed oil, hot water, etc.I am not trying to put the auto tanner down, It's just my preference to do it the old way. And if they really were all that I would think the tanneries would have HUGH auto tanners........but they don't, If I had never owned one I would not type my opinion. However, I hear of people that have 3 auto tanners. and if ya like them that much GREAT.

Did you ever wonder why you have 2 A's in your name when one would suffice? Just kidding. You found out after skinning that coyote that in coyote language, fresh means WHILE HE IS STILL DYING! By the time he is dead, hes an old dead coyote! I splash some old pickle that I save for slippy fox, etc, directly on the spot when Im skinning them. It does help. They dont usually slip completly even though it changes colors. Dont let the skin lay too long during the rest of the process, though.
