which furbearers can be mounted w/o shaving the leather

Submitted by Chris on 1/3/02. ( yotetrapper@hotmail.com ) 66.168.129.180

My question is I am planning on trying to mount my first couple of critters. Out of the furbearer species which ones would or would not require shaving the leather to get a good mount from. I am assuming that coyotes and bobcats would not require shaving as they are relatively thin skinned, but do would you need to shave the leather on the head and face?

Thanks for the help
Chris

Chris,
Be sure to use a good degreaser. Mamals such as Raccoons, Coyote's, Fox and the such tend to be greasy. Just a little tip for ya.

Have fun,
Dave

eyes,lips and nose skin

You'll need to thin the skin down of the eyes, lips, and nose of course for optimal results. You can use a sharp fleshing knife for that. You want the skin that's to be tucked nice and thin.Larger game such as deer need to be shaved down.
