IT IS NOT DP !

Submitted by Alan on 1/23/02. ( outdoordecortax@hotmail.com ) 24.144.44.135

I am sick of talking and hearing about it but I just want to tell all of you taxi-chemist that think spay tan is DP in a bottle that they are full of it. If you are going to talk bad about some product that works great I must say, them you need to get your facts right. I am so sick of everyone on hear that thinks they know everything about everything but dont have a damn clue. I would also like to add, if spray tan is so bad why is it such a success? Maybe if you used it yourself you may like it. I also heard on hear the other day a guy say "it is not a true tan". Who gives a damn. I have mounts in my shop that I welcome anyone to come look at that have been mounted for years useing spay tan and they are holding up as good or better than anything else I have ever used. I dont know of a judge, customer, or anyone for that matter that does test on the mounts they look at to see if they have been truely tanned. So what the hell does it matter? Just wanted to vent a little. Thank You

Alan, I read and reread your post. I think your doing the same thing as all the "taxi-chemist" your complaining about! You state that spray tan is not "DP in a bottle", well not trying to rain on your parade but it's technically not a tan either. Although I'm not a chemist (I do have a sister who is). When a skin or hide is tanned (not preserved) the tanning process replaces the natural proteins in the skin. Spray tan is preserving the skin which makes it closer to DP than tanning. Not saying its good or bad. Not everyone prefers the same brand of hide paste or manikins either. Just as one tannery may do a great job for one taxidermist, may not be the prefered tannery for the next guy.
I thought the whole principal behind this forum was to share or learn from other taxidermists ideas, opinions, and knowledge. If spray tan works well for you, great! But it is not my preference.
Does this make you or I a good or bad taxidermist. No, just different. My personal opinion on tanning is as such. My clients TRUST me with their trophies, and it would not be fair to them for me to give them back anything less than I would accept.
My favorite pair of snake skin boots would'nt be much if the snake skin was'nt tanned, would they? Now keep in mind this is MY opinion.
I'm sure there are some who will disagree and some who will agree with me. It does'nt make me right or wrong, just a difference in opinion. Years ago I tried Rineharts cream tan, I didn't care for it because it did not penetrate the skin completely in all areas. Did this make it a bad product, no I just didn't think it tanned the skins completely. Does this make someone else who uses this method wrong? No, it's just not my preference again a matter of opinion.
Sorry to ramble, just wanted to voice my thoughts and opinions.
Have a great day - Kent

There's one in every crowd! It is plain and simple in my book and that is you cannot please everbody all the time. Why respond to a post if you don't like it?I would bet that not everybody here uses the same manikins, pastes, eyes, etc.Big deal! Why do you think there is more than one product available?

Alan, look us some big words like "simile", "metaphor", and "analogy". That's what spray on TAN is. It's make believe and if the fire gets too hot, stay out of the kitchen. One thing it certainly ISN'T and that's a "TAN".

A minute is about enough

A rose by any other name is still a rose, but spray tan is neither a rose nor a Tan. And thats the rest of the story.

Good Day!

well Alan

Im one of those who says it isnt a tan. It might work for you, thats your biz. But MY biz requires that I use the best that I can, and tan in a can isnt proven...period. It might stabilize a skin. My customers count on me, and I choose not to use it. I like the fella that sells it, too, but thats not going to change my mind. Sorry you feel as you do.

The ultimate test...

Give your customer the option of DP, spray tan, or an honest-to-goodness tanned hide for his hard-earned trophy and see what he chooses. Then throw that spray tan stuff in the crapper.

Are u sure about definition what is a tan? Just exposure to sun doesn't make it a mountable skin? Break down of protein is not only definition. Got chairs with hide seats going on 100 yrs and only ash from wood stove and lard used, taken a lot of wear. Been mounting since 63, pickle bath and arsenic, DP and comm tan(only ones not holding up but doesn't mean yours are not) and many methods come and go. Read "Who moved my cheese" and may be able to encourage better methods and remeber many people eat beef,or have pets that they didn't pay show quality price but they are happy. Be honest, there no animals selected randomly off the shelf & being shown for competition.
