what is the best way to replace the eyes on a bear mount (tanned hide)

I take it, that you don't like the eyes in there, or they are placed wrong and you want to remove them, instead of resoaking the eye area, I would try this,
Take a hammer and punch, and break out the old eyes, then take a dremal tool and clean out the socket, making it a little deeper at the top or botton, then insert the new eye, by sliding it in and down into the opening, and holding it with a pair of tweezers, pack all-game in behing the eye, let it dry, then finish filling and finshing, the eye.
the reason for replacing the eye is the eye is too big. i want the eye to be smaller. i looked at many , many pictures and 90% of them show a small eye (smaller than currently on this mount). i could settle for the current eye but i don't want to and i need help in how to replace it and make it smaller . can i re-soak the eye and will this soften it ?
