Possible Boone and Crockett mountain lion

Submitted by Todd T on 2/9/02. ( deertodd@aol.com ) 152.163.189.133

I recently took in a lion that may make Boone and Crockett. My question is how do I properly handle the skull to officially enter it into the book, as far as how do I store for the 90 day period. Does it have to be completely clean before official scoring. Who do I contact, once I confirm that it will enter the record books, to officially measure. You guys have done this so what else do I need to know. Thanks

THE REQUIREMENTS

are a 60 day drying period, not in the freezer, from the date of kill. If the skull is boiled, cleaned and bleached white, or beetle cleaned...then whitened in a liquid bleach...the drying period starts from the day the skull is removed from the liquid bleaching process.
Call the Boone and Crockett office (406-542-1888)for the info on the nearest Official Measurer. Call the measurer and set up an appointment to have it measured....but only if the client wants to enter it into the book.

Do NOT put that skull in Bleach

Bleach will cause the skull to begin to flake, and yellow. If you yoursrlf are not a experienced Taxidermist. when dealing with a posible record book skull. Don't take chances, with advice that may be questionable, send it to a pro. if you have a book animal you don't want it ruined. to whiten skulls use 40% paroxide and Clairol Basic white.
