was on vacation in Banff and Glacier park and saw numerous pika's and also had a visit in an outhouse by a packrat anyway no one seemed to know if they where legal to hunt or trap (of course not in parks) does anyone here know legal status of these critters?

Pica's

I'm supposing that most people are like me and have no idea if they are "legal" or not. The basic rule of thumb used by MOST wildlife agencies, however, is that if it IS NOT listed as a huntable species, it is not legal. Like all rules, though, this negates the mice and moles that are considered vermin. You need to check with that individual state before going out fuzz busting.

PICA?

Does that date me? For us old farts, typewriters had one of two size types on them as standard. Pica and Elite. When the electrics came about, the IBM Selectric had a golf ball key striker that could type a multitude of types and pitches. Then came computers and those of you who came after that have absolutely NO idea of what I'm talking about. PIKA I do know the difference.

Not Legal

Byrdman,

States of Washington and Idaho classify the pika a protected species. I am not sure about Montana but I would suspect they are the same.
I would not reccomend getting caught with one.
