problem goat hide

Submitted by j hermanns on 2/26/02. ( ) 209.165.147.143

some of you may remember about a month ago I asked about washing a bloody goat hide before sending it to the tannery. It was suggested that I wash the goat by one individual and call the tannery by another. Well, I called the tannery and they said to not worry about washing it and it would probably not have any problems. I sent the hide frozen raw to them and now it is done. Unfortunately it did not come clean. There is a blood stain running the entire length of the hide along the back. The tannery tried to remove the stain, but said they could not get it out. This is a tannery that is supposed to be one of the best for goat/sheep hides. I am not sure anyone is at falt here, but I want to warn anyone out there with goat or sheep hides to pre-wash them before sending to the tannery. I wish I would have. If anyone has any suggestions about what can be done to remove the stain please let me know.
Thanks
Juli

Simple break down.

Blood contains IRON, when IRON oxidizies it RUST.

Rust remove has always worked for me. Now that its tanned a little bleaching may be needed, assuming that its a Mt. Goat.

Juli,
This is not an exception, it IS the rule on goats and white sheep. I've done dozens and I have yet to have a single one that didn't need SOME bleaching. Check the archives. It's no big deal.
