Measuring Bear Skulls?

Submitted by Gary Isaac ( All-Seasons Taxidermy) on 3/25/02. ( isaacdd@i-star.com ) 204.212.124.29

I have a customer that is interested in measuring his bear skull that I am mounting. Can anyone tell me how they go about measuring these? He thinks it may possibly be a P&Y. We want to green score it before possibly taking it in to be offically scored. Thanks in advance, Gary Isaac

BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEASURING BEAR

Measurements must be made with a flexible steel tape and recorded to the nearest one-sixteenth of an inch. Calipers or a skull box may be used. To simplify addition, please enter fractional figures in sixteenths and in proper fractions. Refer to P & Y Measurer's Manual for a detailed description of measuring procedures.

A. Greatest Length is measured between perpendiculars to the long axis of the skull WITHOUT the lower jaw, and EXCLUDING malformations. (Normal teeth are included)

B. Greatest Width is measured between perpendiculars at right angles to the long axis. All adhering flesh, membrane, and cartilage MUST be completely removed before the drying period begins and official measurements are taken.
