I am going to a convention to enter as an amatuer just to see where I stand. Wanting suggestions as this is new to me. I currently have in mind doing a bobcat kitten with a dirt hole and the back half of something like a coon or something as if it was going down the hole while this kitten is trying to grab with its' paw. Sound too corny?

Don't get to complicated with your first stuff. A simple pose would be a good start for your first show. This is just a suggestion. Don't let this deture you from something you realy want to do. It sounds like it would be a nice scene.

Sounds good to me too...but I agree with grouseman.... Do a simple pose for a first piece and work your way up.... Dont let me talk you out of it either but simple is a great start...
Good Luck to ya Scott
Hey Grouseman how ya doin ?
If you are going to enter as an amatuer it is a waste of time. You will only get a good honest appraisal of your mount if you enter it in professional class. Judges hate the amatuer class because they are expected to give a ribbons reguardless of what the work is. Sorry, but that's the truth.
Keep it clean and simple, enter the professional category and you WILL learn. You won't be sorry.
What do they judge by? I understand about realistic and creativity, etc.I mean, everybody poses pheasants, cats, goose, ducks, etc etc. Just wanted something different but maybe this isn't that different. Actually,I first was going to do a canada goose and then a guy called about a bobcat kitten he just caught and it got my wheels turnin'. Thought about my goose standing with the right wing out and up a little with it's head somewhat down in front of.
Clean and Accurate is what a judge like to see. Why do beginners want to be dramatic with their mounts. Start simple and work up from there.
I thought it would be neat to do and I just wanted to see how I could do.It isn't something that I have seen yet and want to challenge myself. Also good for the portfolio.I do appreciate the info from you veterans though and will take your opinions into consideration.
