Raccoon mounting

Submitted by Dana Shultz on 01/10/2003. ( ) 209.152.118.178

I recently trapped a beautiful, dark raccoon and decided I would mount him. I'm an avid bird taxidermist, but haven't spent as much time on mammals. I was wondering what the best way to flesh the coon is, if I don't have a fleshing machine, should I go have it done somewhere? If I scrape it all off by hand, I'll be there for a week!Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dana

Dont discourage! I struggle with bird fleshing, but animals like coon seem simple to me. I think if you can succesfully flesh birds you can probably tackle a coon. Just take your time and use commen

A easy way to flesh them is buy a 4 inch diameter piece of pvc pipe and cut a point on one end slide the fur over it. take a two handle fleshing knife and the fat just rolls right off. you will need a razor around the face to clean it up good. I have been a trapper for many years now and have started to do birds myself there alot faster than coons but after you have done a few it will be alot easier.
