Is this a coyote?

Submitted by Mike on 01/01/2003. ( ) 68.16.94.49

My wife took in what is supposed to be a coyote from a customer. The facial features and head shape look like a coyote. However, It is a female that weighs about 50 pounds. It's belly is white and its back is black. It also has blue eyes and the paws are bigger than I am used to seeing. The customer swears it is a coyote. I asked my wife if it had a collar on when he brought it in(ha-ha). The coloring reminds me of a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute. Has anyone ever seen a coyote with blue eyes or this kind of coloring?

Sounds like a Coy-Dog.

Coy-Dogs are a cross breed of domestic dogs and coyotes. If the person who brought it in is sure that it wasn't a stray then it could be a coy dog. Could also just be part of a group of dogs gone feral that are running together. Certainly not a pure coyote the likes of which I've ever heard bout...

Mike, Those coyotes come in lots of colors but the tail is the key when the color gets real odd. Coyote tails are "wild" looking like fox and wolf. Coy dogs do happen for sure and if that's what you've got I would bet the tail is still "coyote". If you've got something else.....well good luck, Aaron H.

check the toes.

"coyotes" or wolves that have any toe on them that are of a off or white color are domestic dogs, all or part. That is what a fur buyer would look at first.

The Tail

I was told that a true coyote can be identified by the spot on its tail. Could be an old wives' tale though.

well its obviously not a pureblood coyote

Not with blue eyes! If you want to know for sure send a blood sample to Texas A & M for DNA testing. In fact the coyote has been blamed for the extinction of the Red Wolf in Texas because of all the inbreeding between the two species.

LT is right

there are no blue eyed coyotes running around. Most likely you have a coydog here or even just a total and complete mutt with no yote blood at all. A blood test will tell you. If you want to go through all that trouble that is.

MIKE:The specimem you have can fall into several areas>canis latrans: yellow eyes-black lines on legs-cylindrical low hanging black tipped tail!many sizes exist in different habitat!WOLF crosses are more than common! In the 80's most coyote were pretty much pure!Since the coming of urban development and such a large amount of feral unwanted dogs mingling amidst the mess!Heat cycles in all canine come to every 6 mo.Some call us small minded because they say coyote only at a last resort mate with the WOLF!Heads-canines-snow foot print tracking is much the same! All rare pigmentation mutation occur at even a higher rate than in domestic because of adaptation to locale! The Odd (dog) you have is most like a COY-DOG!Most states Etc:do not look at the broad perspective of the BAD-BAD-BAD-canis latrans trying to exist in home territory while they do not control feral dog populations!Under well feed Meals the male coyote will readily breed your standard poodle female or your little Teacup yorkie male will readily accecpt the lone in season smaller canis latrans sharing his feed dish outside!
Urban development has made it's bed and the DNA is the only way for proof of authanticity!Remember all the dogs came genetically from WOLVES way back when? Thanks,RICH

I disagree!

Coydogs are definitely an exception to the rule. Canines are in strict competition as predators, and seldom cross. The timing of a female dogs heat often puts pups out at the wrong time of the year as well. I believe the best bet to see coyote crosses is when they first start to populate an area, and again, its the exception. Having said this, point number two. You guys have never seen a blue eyed coyote? Juvenile, or young of the year coyotes have blue eyes that turn pale green, hazel, yellow or brown as they mature. If you have that odd a color coyote, its maybe just...A DOG! Somebody recently sent me a pic too. I think its a dog, no cross, just a domestic, maybe free roaming, but not coyote. Sorry if I ruffle some feathers, but thats just how it goes...For whatever its worth, Timber wolves have a much different pack order then do coyotes, I dont believe they cross as much either, with the exception of the soon to be extinct Red wolf. Our coyotes up here have the same color phases as Red wolves...

Coyotes in the northeast/ New York state will readily cross with the domestic. At least the males will. Found this out the hard way while coon hunting my female walker while in heat. She was the one that was reluctant. Had two big males chasing her back to me off a hot coon track. This happened two nights in a row in two seperate places so it wasn't just a fluke pair of yotes. Just thought I'd let you know about my run ins. Have thought about penning my females and saveing the urine in the heat cycle for a bate for hunting but haven't tried it yet. This did happen during the coyote breeding season or alittle before. If it makes any difference.

hate to be the one to ask, but...

How in the heck could you know what those coyotes had in mind? They chase any dog thats not already chasing them! I will still say that cross breeding is definitely an exception to the rule, and not the norm. Glad your dog is a-ok, though!

those things are not friendly

This response submitted by unknown on 02/01/2003. ( ) 24.60.254.183

No way on earth those coy dogs frienddly to people or other domesticated animals. They have caused a great deal of pain, because of the loss of our dog that has been with us fro 8 yrs. Those dogs should be killed. I dont feel i need to share the details of my case but i think everyone should know they are not friendly at all. They eat what they can no matter what.
