raccoon ear question

i already went through the archives and couldn't find any thing that answered this question, i have a video tape from Van Dykes called mounting a small mammal full body mount, when doing the ears the guy says if using ear inserts you must take out the cartilage, but he is using the bondo method without the inserts, does that mean you don'thave to take the cartilage out? if so why not? is this the same with deer ears and other animals? maybe he did take the cartilage out and it just seems that he didn't by what he said, i'm not sure, anyway if someone could answer this i would appreciate it. thanks joe

You've got it right.

You need to remove the cartilage if you're going to use earliners.

Joe, Bondo ears are done with the cartilage left in. For ears smaller than deer I prefer Apoxiesculpt instead of bondo. Takes longer but you can get a finer shape and more natural ear without the hurry. Just keep checking back with them till they set. Enjoy,Aaron H.
