My wife and I are starting recreational taxidermy in hopes of one day having our own studio. The question I pose is what gauge wire should I use to attach my fox squirrel to a hollow log? The squirrel will be mounted on his hind legs with a nut in his fore paws. I will begin the mountin process next week. Thanks in advance.

You can easily afix a wire or a long threded screw to the bottom foot of the squirrel form using epoxy prior to mounting. The guage does not have to be anythicker than a coat hanger as the actual mount is not very heavy. Lots of theforms come with wire runing through them for attachment also. Since in this pose, his bottom is also touching the log, this can also be a place to attack a wire and such priorto mounting, or after if it is to be totally hidden
WASCO sells a 5 inch black, extruded thread, screw that works perfectly for sitting squirrels. I set the mount where I want it and then drive this big sucker right through the body from the anus area. The extruded threads prevent pull outs. On the hollow log, you'd have to drill an access hole, but it could be hidden quite well with Critter Clay or colored Apoxie.
