Shaving around whiskers

Submitted by Ron P (Wisachgak) on 02/23/2003. ( wisachgak@juno.com ) 67.251.135.227

After searching the archives (maybe didnt word it right in my search)I still cant find any good tips for fleshing or shaving around whiskers on mammals. I Seem to have difficulty getting that meat away from the whisker bulbs without cutting them. Any ideas on the subject? I also have learned through trial that you cant shave a coyote very thin without getting into the hail folicles, are there other critters that I will run into this on?

I think you may be trying to hard. Just seperate by dicing around the whiskers on smaller game and then many taxidermists just remove the whiskers before tanning on big game like lions and put them back in with super glue after mounting. A good tan will penitrate a little heavy flesh in areas around the whiskers and such.

or you could

Remove the Whiskers

Ron,

Try removing the whiskers. Once removed, you can thoroughly flesh out the area. I always remove the whiskers and reinstall them during the finishing process. This takes a little more time but the results are great. I have always had difficulty getting the whiskers to dry and remain in the proper position. With this technique, I have complete control over whisker placement. Just a thought. Good luck.
