lf you are wishing to know the earliest form of preservation of complete specimens, it is the embalming of the Egyptians.

The earliest form of taxidermy was not specifically performed by taxidermists, but by upholsterers, who stuffed the skins of animals in a similar fashion they would stuff materials for the use as furniture.
The earliest record that l am aware of of a bird ,is of a Dodo stuffed around the 1600 s. It was in the posession of John Tradescant ,a Royal gardener who also collected curiosities. These were later left to his son, John Tradescant who then passed his collection, including the Dodo on to Elias Ashmole, which became the Ashmole Museum. The Dodo was all but destroyed in 1755 when powers to be decided that its decomposition warranted its destruction. Fortunately the head and one leg were salvaged, which rem,ain the Oxford university today.
