im using Life Tone laquer paints, I must be doing something wrong. how can you make this stuff not scratch off, ive cleaned with most solvents, then paint, but it will scratch off with finger nail. (dont say cut my nails). clear coating it with a matt laquer does the trick, but makes it look fake. im trying to keep all the fine details.
im new at all of this so any advice will be helpfull.

Primer

How about using a primer for it. If you go to the auto paint section lets advertise Pep Boys here: look for the primers they have for plastics. This helps bind the paint to the plastics a bit better.

In addition to using a quality primer keep in mind that not all paints are supposed to be tough. If it scratches off with your finger nail.. stop scratching it! There are paints designed to LOOK GOOD and others designed to offer a protective coating. Get the right paint for the job. I've used urethane coatings before that when you try to scratch them with a car key the plating comes off the key leaving the paint unscathed! Pretty remarkable stuff. Your horns should not have people scraping at them etc - it's a piece of art - not a scratch ticket. As Frank mentionned - a good primer may help - but even my well primed pewter and resin casts will scratch if not handled properly...

LOL raven I think your right maybe I should stop scratching it honestly I never thought of that, I always figured if I was going to make and sell someting then it should be unscratchable. my test is I put it in my book bag and take it to school if it gets scratched I wipe it down with acitone and start over with a new concoction of paints, primers and solvents ive done this over 30 under 50 times. ok maybe im just a freak ,I think ill stop doing that now.
I guess sometimes it just takes a dose of common sence.
I love this line: If it scratches off with your finger nail.. stop scratching it!
