I am going on a muskox hunt in April and I am woundering "If I get one" what are the steps needed to be taken to properly salt the hide before shiping it to the tannery? Some have said you need to score the hide because it is so thick? Any info would help!
Thanks

Aaron;
Your best bet is to take it to a tannery in Alaska. There is one in Anchorage called Alpha Fur Dressing. Let your guide take care of the animal for you. Contact the tannery before you go, and explain to them your situation.

you can bring it home with you. I hunted Paulatauk,NWT on the Horton River basin. It will be so cold up there the skin will freeze solid in the field. The Inuits will set up a small tent to skin the heads out...and they are good at it. Perhaps you should help and turn the lips, eyes and ears.
You do not need to score the hide....its not that thick. It does need to be sealed by the Game and Fish Dept. while there and the horns need to have a seal attached...no big deal. After the sealing process I just roll it up and take it outside and let it freeze solid again...or fully freeze if only partially thawed. Place in a plastic bag and then encase in another one and then in a GI bag or whatever and take it home. If it leaks blood from salting or thawing the airlines will take it off the plane. Been there.
