preserve raccoon tails

Is there any way to preserve just the tail of a raccoon without having to take the entire animal to a taxidermist--any way I can do it myself? I want to use a few in decorating a cabin. thanks

Mary;
You have to remove the bone, split tih tail. Try and scrape any fat thats on the tail, then salt it down. leave it on for a good 24hrs. Then scrape the salt off, and resalt until hard. Other than that your going to have to tan it, if you want it preserved permanently. Good Luck.

Geez, just buy them. They're like a dollar each, already tanned. Why work for less than a dollar an hour to decorate?
