We have plenty of black squirrels around our house. I was going to trap some this fall in a live haveahart trap. What is the best way to kill the squirrel in the trap without causing damage. I thought about just throwing the whole trap in the freezer (with squirrel alive in it). But, that sounds awfully cruel, any suggestions will be appreciated.

I accidently caught a squirrel in a live trap a few years ago. We had a woodchuck getting into the garden. He wore all the hair off his nose trying to get out through the mesh. He was worthless for mounting in less than ten minutes, because of that. live trapping is not a method I would suggest to harvest squirrels. And the freezer isn't a good idea either.
use your car exaust, very humane, no pain, just puts them to sleep! they would feel more pain if your vet did it by shot. good luck

Check your state and municipality laws. There are some towns that prohibit the killing of black squirrels, and in most states there is a bag limit and season on squirrels. Take a trapper education course and get a hunting or fur-bearer permit. If you don't know how to kill an animal, and you are going to use a live trap, please don't trap one.
Car exhaust is about 350 degrees, to use it is incredibly humane as it burns and suffocates. If you want to suffocate your critter, just put the trap into water : Drowning is recommended, depends on the size of the trap though.
you dont put the damn thing that close to the pipe, i can hold my hand two inches away from most exaust pipes comfortably. you put a fair sized box on the end of that pipe and i guarentee you it will not reach no 350 degrees! use the 110 conibear it is alot better way to go though.

If you have a small enough trap, just wrap it in a pillow case or other cloth bag/tarp. Then the opening goes over the tail pipe.....quick and easy.
I never thought about car exhaust or drowning the animal. A conibear trap would be nice, but don't want to use because afraid of catching something else in it (although putting it in a box in a tree is a good idea). And Lawman, we are allowed to take black squirrels here during the season. I will check the municapality laws though, just to be on the safe side. And I have taken a trapper education course along with a hunter education course. And I do have a fur bearer permit. My question was how to kill it without damaging the hide. I know how to take a .22 short and kill an animal.
You could just use a pellet gun or 22, will work great with small hole, no problems. or I guess you could start mixing your peanut butter with anti-freeze. Personally I think its more humane to just pop the squirrel behind the ear with a pellet gun.

Don't use anti-freeze like Matt suggested I have seen that stuff do horrible stuff to animals. Bleeding out of there eyes, going into sizures etc. and most of the anti-freeze you buy now is non toxic to animals so you'd have to find old stuff. Chase
if you were to use say a conibear in a tree say atleast 5 or so feet off the ground, preferably outside a knot hole w/ a corn cob for your visual bait. or put a sixteen penny nail in a limb bend the nail over one jaw of the trap bait both sides of the trap incredibly effective. watch during winter months hair will freeze to the trap jaws. drowning would be my preffered method if caught in live trap , but i agree with old fart live traps enable the animal to become very violent , some times they even self mutilate.
Let the poor thing watch TV commercials for a few hours, that should do it!
If you want to mount a animal, getting it wet is not a good idea as the moisture will allow bacteria to flurish and cause slippage of the epidermis. The conibear trap is the best Idea, or a pellet gun. I have shot many squirrles up it the tops of trees with a pellet gun and they are in great shape to mount. You should find out if it is legal t odo so first. In some states, maybe all, a pellet gun is considered a firearm and subject to the laws of firearms. Also, a lot of states do have seasons on squirrels and require a tag like was mentioned before. I have seen a lot of animals in the have a heart traps just rub all the fur off there feet and arms as well as the nose and face trying to get out. If I was to trap a animal, the conibear is the way to go as the animal is dead in seconds or less.
Just submerge the trap in water (creek or pond) until the whole trap is covered. This is the easiest way to dispatch the squirrel.
I had grey squirel attatched to my thumb for over an hour couldnt get it to let go DON"T ASK LOL any how just shoot the damn things and practice fixing holes we all know just about everything we take in has plenty of them.

If you want to get rid of your squirrel problem take your standard single spring foot trap and bait it with loose corn kernals. Set some Kernals on the pan. The squirrel will push down the pan with its nose and the jaws will clamp on his throat braking its neck and killing it instantly

JUST PUT A TOE SACK OVER THE END OF THE SACK AND LET THE SQURREL IN THE SACK AND SMACK IT AGANINST A TREE OR THE GROUND TWICE. DONT USE ANTIFREEZE.

I think that last suggestion is getting a little out of hand...and the one before it...and the one before it...what the hell is wrong with the carbon monoxide? It's gotta be the cleanest, cheapest, most humane way to kill the damn thing. Hell, people kill themselves that way accidentally and on purpose all the time (well, ok, relativly speaking).

Well anyway shooting them in the head with a 22cal. or pellet is a great way to rid of them,( It works for me! )After that its nonething but recipes and good eaten after that.

I LIVE IN NORTH JERSEY AND HAVE HAD SEVERAL FAMILIES (SQUIRREL) LIVING WITH US FOR THE ENTIRE WINTER. MY SON HAS STOOD BY THE BEDROOM WINDOW WAITING TO SHOOT THEM ONE AT A TIME AS THEY COME OUT BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE NO END WE THOUGHT OF CLOSING UP THE ACCESS BUT I'M AFRAID OF WHAT THEY WILL DO LIKE DESTROY OTHER AREAS OR DIE AND SMELL REALLY BAD.
