Advice on covering a bald spot on a bobcat

Submitted by Daniel Bond on 09/23/2003. ( danbond3@earthlink.net ) 206.134.65.21

I have a commercial tanned bobcat hide, wonderful condition and want to use it for the full mount. But I have a spot about the size of a dime in front of the eye that the hair has come off of and now just leather is exposed. I thought about glueing down hair from elsewhere on the body then triming it and painting it to blend in, does anyone else have any better suggestions or methods, I could really use the help. It is my first time doing a cat and I would like it to turn out good. Thank you for everyone's time! --Dan

Patch it

I would suggest getting a scrap bobcat face from somewere. It should be cheap. Cut out the bad spot. cut out a patch from the extra face. Sew the patch into place. When you mount it, be sure to glue this area well. I have done this type repair many times with all types of critters. Take your time and it is usually undetectable.

Glueing hair and getting it to lay right, with the proper hair patterns and colors never seems to come out as well as a patch, especially on the face. The glue loose hair trick is more useful in more obscure areas, at least for me. Good luck.

I'd like to add................

Deermeister is right, but I'd like to add that it may be tricky to find a cat with similar color and markings-also, you will need to use a very thin tranparent/strong thread. Your sewing skills will need to be very good-but the Meister is right, if done right-it will be undetectable. Good luck. Skullboy
