Tony;
It's called a silver Fox actually. It's a melanistic phase of the red fox. They're not all that common in the wild, but it does occur.

Tony;
Actually it's called a silver fox. It's called melanism, which causes black or nearly black in the skin, fur, or plumage. They're not really that common in the wild, but it does occur. Most Black, or silver fox are ranched raised animals. So to answer your question; yes a red fox can be black.

Yes, the above is true, that it could be a silver fox. A grey fox during their "artic" phase will also be very dark in color, but not as dark as the silver fox.

I saw what looked like a black fox recently in Colorado. It was standing
next to the road eating a prairie dog not far from where my car was
parked. It seemed not easily spooked and just stood there munching
while I watched. I never knew that foxes could be black. Thanks for the
explanations.
