WANTED! Advice or Taxidermist for RED FOX

Submitted by Rita on 10/26/2003. ( mommyrita2002@yahoo.ca ) 142.166.147.117

I was asked by a friend to find out what he can do with a beautiful red fox that had gotten itself trapped in a rabbit snare he had set. The snare was around it's neck (don't ask me how that happened) Anyway, it was still alive when he went to check his snares, and since it was unapproachable he put it down, rather than see it suffer. What can he do with it? (we are located in St. John's, Newfoundland) or you can email me.

Depending on the damage (whether it is to the skin or hair), you should be able to have it lifesize mounted or just a shoulder mount...or make a rug or just have it tanned for a hanging fur. Many options, it just depends on how much money you want to spend!

No Damage Visible (re: Red Fox)

I have examined the fox myself, and although I am not an expert in this field, this particular fox would be absolutely beautiful lifesize mounted. It's fur is so thick and long. Also there are no signs of obvious external trauma such as bleeding (It almost looks as though it's only sleeping) What would it take to have it lifesize mounted? Where is the nearest place to St. John's Newfoundland that would do this? Any and ALL information you or anyone else can provide would be helpful-What would it's approximate worth be before and/or after it was mounted?

Before and after

Well, again it depends on size and condition. If it is a fairly large fox with really good coloring it could be worth close to $50-$70 before it is tanned (skinned and salted), and about $120 after it is tanned. After it is professionally mounted with a nice base...it depends on the area, but around here (NE Arkansas) $400-$500. However, I do know that mounted lifesizes are MUCH higher in other parts of the US. I would just look for a local taxidermist in your area. Or you can ship it to the US for taxidermy work (as far as I know). I hope that you have wrapped the fox and froze it (if not..the skin will be bad and fall out).
