Bowgull is right, it is best to buy a kit, it will have everything you need for $25 approximately give or take. It will also have instructions on how to tan the hide. Check out WASCO's tanning kits for large mammals! Good Luck!

I think that your first project is a little on the difficult side . Tanning a cow elk is quite the task for your first project . Dont get me wrong it can be done but you will need to invest ($) in some basic tools to acomplish this . Might be a good idea to flesh and salt until dry then save some money and have it professionaly done . If you really want to tackle this project go to the tanning category on this site and start reading until you cant read anymore . That should give you a basic idea of what it takes to tan animals . With that knowledge behind you it might help you make a better decision about which way you want to go . http://Rittelsupplies.net/ has some good tanning kits that are very simple to use.Good Luck
