Fleshing knife.
I"m looking for a fleshing knife but I really don"t want to fork over $60 to $100 plus for a knife from a catalogue. Is their alternative knife that I can use for this? I"ve tried fleshing with my skinning knife but it"s hard with just a paring knife. Thanks

I used to use an old fashioned draw knife like they used for wood. But the best thing to do is spend the money to get the right equipment.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with this one tool. I bought mine through a guy selling out, I did not think I would ever use it, but it came with the deal. Now after having it, I can't see being without it.
I am assuming, you are meaning, fleshing, as in, getting ready to salt cure it, before it gets tanned, or is put on a strecher for drying. I find this works excellent, after skinning or caping out an animal, getting most of the thick meat off, and then salting, and rolling it up, putting it on an incline to drain for 24 hours. Then unroll it, shake the salt off, and flesh it out.
If so, this is what you need, I have used it on, deer, elk, buffalo, bear, and all the smaller mamals.
You can but it from WASCO, it is in their new catalog, ( The Edge ) on page 158, Meyer 2 in 1 fleshing knife, item number MR500, $42.95. Or go to their online catalog, ( www.taxidermy.com ) I keep telling myself, that I need to buy one of these a year, to keep and have on hand, in case they ever become unavaliable to buy.
I think this would serve you well, and would suffice.
Good luck, rw
We got some used ones nothing wrong with them.
