I am having some problems with mounting a squirrel i killed. I kill them in my backyard and then skinned them right after that. I used Dry Preservative on them and i let it sit over night and when i came back in the morning i was fitting it and the fur was coming off. I don't know what i did wrong but that has happened to me a couple of times. I would appreciate it if someone could help me.

salt it down and let dry hard.then rehydrate then drain and get most of the water off then dp and it should be ok.
-All you would of needed to do was roll it up In a bread bag and put In refridgerator over night.
Then when you have form ready and base & ready to mount you can rub with D.P
Hey willie, I was wondering what you mean by hydrating it. Soaking it in water or something else? And how long should i salt it for?

Mark , dont listen to what Willie said . If your havng problems with the fur slipping now , it will be worse if you have to soak it . Just skin it out , put it in a bag in the frig until the next day and then DP and mount . Dont use the DP the night before as it will start to make the skin tight . You should really try to do the whole job in one day if you have time . Rick
I usually skin them out, then flesh them on a wire wheel. After that I wash them in cold water with Dawn dishwashing liquid to clean out the dirt and blood. After that, I rinse them in cold water and tumble them in sawdust. Next, I blow out all of the sawdust with my air compressor, and put dry preservative on them and then I mount them. You will have no problem using this method.
Good Luck!
I do the same thing.
Skin the squirrel, flesh it, and then put it in some Krowtann for 3-4 days. Then all you've got to do is neutralize and there! Your skin is ready to mount. I've had lots of problems with squirrels before.. it would seem like when I tried to salt, rehydrate, and tan them they would always slip in some places. Since I started tanning my squirrels with Krowtann, I have had no problems whatsoever! And talk about simple, too! I suggest you give it a try.

That you fleshed them after you skinned them. Could this be the problem?
thanks for all of your tips. I'll try them all.
you can not try them all. LOL. You have to decide on one method and one alone. If you'd try every method suggested to you here you'd have a hairless squirrel for sure. Since this is already slipping, chalk it off as an experience and try one of the methods suggested to you. With the next squirrel try to tan it according to what Amy said. You'll learn with each squirrel you do and soon you'll find which method works best for you. It is all part of the learning process.
