My deer lease manager shot a squirrel for me out of his yard that was eating up all of his bird feed and I've never seen a fox squirrel of this color before. Is this a common color for them to be?

I've been looking around at pics of fox squirrels on the internet and have only seen the normal looking ones that are gray with reddish bellies...not mottled gray and red with red tails.

I have seen grays, Fox and grays with a reddish tail, even blacks and whites (not albinos either) and black, white and gray. But none like yours, I would mount it asap.
Here is another pic of it from the back...you can see how the colors are all mixed together and there is no gray at all in the tail hair. She also has a dark V shape on her head.

I have seen the colors of fox squirrels run the gamut here in NE Florida. We have one that we have been feeding in our backyard that is similar to the one you have pics of but its a bit more blonde.
Solid black is also pretty prevalent here.
I too have mounted a few different colors of squirrels, but have never seen a golden one like that. I am curious what part of the country that was killed in? and what climate it was in. im down here in mid texas, we got the black, grey, and a mix of those two, and very few reddish grey colored ones. I know there are lots of different colored skunks but thats a weird squirrel there. I agree mount that sucker quick and do a very good job.
thanx for posting it, cool...
It was shot in East Texas....Newton County during the spring squirrel season. The man that shot it for me had never seen one like it either and thought I would like to have it :) Plus it kept raiding his bird feeders...I guess that is why it's so big. Measures at 14 X 10. He's going to try to get me a black phase gray squirrel now that he's been seeing around the feeders...lol.
