TANNERY UPDATES PLEASE

Submitted by Justin on 12/02/2003. ( jshein@bouldersci.com ) 166.93.12.186

I have searched through the archives and have seen both good and bad reviews of many tanneries. I can only guess that the inconsistancy is due to different qualities of prepared skinds sent in and possibley the rotation of different people at the tannery. It has been 5 or 6 years since I have sent things off to a tannery. I am thinking of using New Method and have in addition to deer capesl, some life size bobcats, coyotes and fox and some small delicate stuff such as ermine, mink, etc. I would be interested in hearing new and current reviews about how they have been doing for folks both on the larger stuff and the small stuff. I would rather not lose the feet on my little specimens! I will probably be shipping in Jan/february time frame.

thanks in advance for your thoughts!

New Method

I have used new mentod for 25 years. Over the years I have stoped sending capes and lifesize to them. The reason being is they continually damage the claws and wiskers on all the capes and lifesize. Often times they damage the ears and blow them out but they now tie strap all the ears to keep from blowing them apart. If you send them bobcats you will surley get a cat back that has very nice fur and soft supple leather but the wiskers will be reduced to stumps. Bear claws often are mashed and splintered, cougar wiskers look like tiny stumps, fox, raccoon, mink, coyote, bobcat etc. wiskers the same.

I still use them for all my flat hides like deer and elk hides, beaver flat hides or the customer that wants a bobcat or coyote tanned and not mounted. You cannot beat the clean and soft flat hides they produce, but they over tumble all their hide damaging the claws and wiskers and sometimes the ears.

Randy, where then?

Thanks for the words of experience Randy, where then do you go for your lifesize and capes? I am interested in them being dry tanned. I am not familiar with wet tanning at all so it scares me a bit.
thanks!

I do not believe That New Method if it is the same one located in Ca. Would take in a couger. Since it is against the law in Ca.
