coyote form modification

Submitted by Mickey on 12/21/2003. ( mickcham@mindspring.com ) 209.86.143.164

I am doing a pedestal coyote and ordered a form (accurately measured). I started to put it together yesterday but the mouth corner extends almost 1.5 inches past the corner of the mouth slot in the form. The eye to nose is right. The eyes are in the right place when the nose is in position. The ears seem to be too far back. If I place them with the nose and eyes in the right place there is loose, bunched fur between the ears and eyes. My worry is, if I extend the nose to accomodate the mouth, the eye to nose will be off. Simply extending the head will not increase the mouth length. If I gouge the mouth slot farther back, the corner will be in an anatomically inccorrect place (behind the eyes). The only change-out heads that are larger only give me a .5" in eye to nose and may put the eyes in the wrong position.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mickey

Lips are a control by a spincter muscles group, this allows them to open wide.

Pin the front of the lips where they should go. start at the coner of the mouth and tuck the corner skin.

Now work your way around the top lip adjusting the lip for evenness and symetry, now do the same with the lower lips.

In most cases you should go by the sculptors form, thay have studyed the animals far closer than we normally do.

Watch the wolves, buy reference calenders wolves are great reference for your coyote mount. Even when howling the yotes mouth is amazingly small, not the huge gapping holes I see many taxidermist doing.

Hope this helps you.

i know hwat you are saying - seems to be way too much skin for slot - it will all fit - heres what i do - pin or tuck the front of the mouth and then go back to the corner and tuck it - then i just keep pushing it all in the slot in the middle - it all fits fine but you have to do it once to believe it - good luck

ive seen tanneries hang them through an eye hole on a hook to drain them after tanning this will cause the whole animal to stretch long.
as john said widen your slot at the back cornerners and push some of the lip back in there work your lip skin from the corners front tucking towards the back until you hide the excess, i try to work it out so that by the time i get to the canines im pushing the lip straight in, good reference is essential here, you will see the short hair patterns will flow correctly following this methode. best of luck paul
