I was wondering if anyone can recommend an eye size for an eastern gray squirrel...an approximation is fine, too....also, should the eye fill the socket compleatly? If so, that would answer my first question, obviously..

I would not take anyones suggestions, I would measure the eye, and also the width of the eyes on the squirrel, and then make a drawing on a piece of paper.
Record all the measurements you take, nose to eye, nose to ear, nose to back of head, width of front corners of the eye, width of back corners of eye, width of ears, and so on, with these all wrote down, you will have all the information, you need, when it comes time to put it back together.
I you do not have the whole squirrel, (then you should have said so in your post, it makes it easier to answer.) then you can not do all of the above that I mentioned before skinning the squirrel. I would go with a 10mm eye.
If you do have the squirrel, skin it out and take a hypoderic needle, and inject some water in the eyes if they have sunk. Just enough so they look natural, than take some dental algenate, you will have to put some clay in between the teeth where there is a hole.and submerse the skull and a little of the neck into the algenate, when it sets up, carefully pull the skull out, make sure there is no water in that mold, and pour bondo mix with fiber glass resin in the mold, stick a wire into the bondo just when it starts to set up. After it has set up, pull it out, you will now have a cast of the head, it will show you all the detail,
Later when you go to mount your squirrel, you can measure the eye or anything else for getting the squirrel mounted correctly.
Good luck, and just remember, jump in with both feet.
