I am attempting to mount my first fox and I have a question about the manikin I got. I bought a manikin of a fox laying down curled up in a ball with it's head resting on its front feet.
My little grey fox is still frozen whole, and I'm wondering where to cut this fella open to easily get it on the manikin. Does anyone have any experience with this pose?
Thanks,
Jason

i would dorsal skin it. go from between the front shoulders down the spine to just short of the base of the tail. you will have to put relief slots in your mannikin so the skin will pull into place. laying and sitting mounts can be tricky, if you have another animal to work with try a standing one first.
Like Gary said, or you can cut it along the side n the back side. I did a lying down fawn mount posed like you atated, and the dorsal cut was a nightmare when you had to sew up because of the bunching of the skin where the head was turned, i did nother and cut it along the side where it was nestled along a driftwood blowdown so it wouldnot be seen, and it mounted up much easier. If the back side is not going to be seen, i would advise cutting it down the side from the front shoulder to the raer shoulder. This way, all the sewing is not to be seen, and the neck area will lay in place naturally not having to pull together and bunch up as yu sew

I CAN'T and anytime I get a mount like that, I'm thinking, if I case cut it, how will I mount it. Simple. Cut the mannikin and cut the legs off. A dorsal cut has worked for years, but I can never get one sewn back up to where it doesn't show. I always cut a mannikin before I think about cutting a hide. To get the idea, look at Roger Martin's fawn forms at McKenzie. No seams to ever show.
You using dental floss? I almost always dorsal skin and sew with floss and don't have any problems.Just wondering!
Maybe I shall make time at nationals and give you a special hands on seminar on sewing up a dorsal incision. LMAO. What yer say?
Maybe I should teach YOU how to mount an animal and never have an exposed incision. LMAO.
I forgot to answer you. No, I don't use dental floss. I use 8 pound Fireline that disappears into any thin skinned animal, BUT it ain't the medium, it's the message. I CAN'T SEW WORTH DIDDLY. I recognize it and I avoid it at all costs. LOL
