I'm preparing to do my first coyote shoulder mount and I'm a little concerned about degreasing it? I have read alot of taxidermists just give the hide a good 2 to 3 washings with dawn dish soap and have no problems with the animal having a smell after mounting. I have read that some of the stink comes from the foot pads. Seeing that i'm only doing a shoulder mount, can I get around buying degreaser from a local taxidermist, and just go with the dawn washing? I do this a hobby and would like to get around placing another order. Thank you

yea, tide or liquid ivory will work as long as it's not super
greasy.Use 4T of either to one gallon of water. wash for 10 to
15 min. several times and that will work.
Shaving it very close will help, but in my opinion, and Ive done a ton of fox, coon and coyotes, that grease has to be cleaned out of the hide. The last post suggested Ivory, but Im of the opinion that a degreaser is better. I know youre looking to save money, so try the Ivory if this isnt a customer piece. Then youll have a better idea for next time around. If the glue sticks, the hairs stays nice, and it doesnt rip while mounting and the bugs dont bother it, Id say Ivory might work. Im not taking the chance though. Good luck with your pedestal mount.
