George Roof, Skunk smell

Submitted by Tony on 02/10/2004. ( birdman27 ) 208.159.223.153

George,

I read a post in the archives about a year ago. the subjest was... "How do ya get the skunk smell out of a hide", or somthing like that? I passed a nice one on the road today and, it didn't stink much. I stopped and looked at it, and it was perfect! I though, "This would be a great mount!" I got it, and sent the wife to the dollar store for some peroxide. I jabbed the little critter all around its anus with a syrenge. (spelling?)I finally found the gland with the good stuff! lol I then cut around the skunks anus and tied it off as you stated. I started skinning what was going to be a futer life size mount. I was doing this outside on a makeshift skinning bench. My wife poked her head out the door and said I was stinking the house up! Funny thing is, all the doors and windows were closed, and is cold outside! LMAO! She said "can't you smell that?" I said "My nose is burning, and my eyes are watering, I can't smell nothing"!
lol The LS skunk turned into a pelt, I can't imagine standing there skinning out the toe bones! I had your smell recipe mixed up and dunked the pelt in there. I SEE WHY NOW...... WHY YOU CAN'T RE-USE THE STUFF! Man, it started foaming all over the place, it ran everywhere! I sure am glad I didn't do that in in shop! I haven't had that much fun in a while..... in a sick sort of way! LOL
You little mixture of poroxide, dawn, and baking soda did the trick!
I washed it a bunch of more times, and rinsed well. There is still a slight smell. I put it in the pickel after that. Will the pickel take care of the rest of the smell? The smell is 1/100th what it was!
I hope you enjoyed reading, and I hope someone got a laugh!
Great post for the archives! I geuess I will try the life size next time! lol

Tony,

I got a kick ot of your story. I skinned out a nubian /angora cross goat today. It was a mature billy with 43 inch horns and I think it is supposed to be white. Apparently they urinate all over them selves and let me tell you, I would have rather skinned out a skunk compared to this guy! He smelled like a cross between rotten milk and old peoples toenails. As I sit here in front of the computer I can still smell it. Hey George, do you have a majic mix to get rid of goat funk?

hey tony

Jeanette, the smell of a goat is caused by the lanolin in the skin. Bruce Rittel sells a product that works well on this one.

Tony, the pickle will take some of the smell out, but it will break down the molecular stucture of the and your post wash with a good soap will help finish it off. I also use Knobloch's Deodorizer for a final wash and then their Presoak to complete the cycle.
