Hi there I have mounted alot of squirrels. Now i am mounting one for competition, I have a few questions about the tail. I always just use a wire inserted into the tail but sometimes the tail hairs lay down and dont fluff up. I know that you can use acuflex foam tails. Or foam wrapped tails but i am wanting to know if there is any way to get them to fluff up nice like they naturaly are, by just using a wire. Also Who al has their squirrels tanned and who ises dry preservative. If you do use dry preservative which works best: Borax, Puffed dry preservative, or just natural dry preservative. I know that havign them tanned works the best but i do not have to time ot wait for it to return from the tannery. and i have used presertvative on all my other squirrels and they rurn out great once they are painted. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I back brush them and then take my airbrush to separate the hairs. Once groomed to be fluffy and rounded, I stand back with a cheap hairspray and mist them very gently. In 5 minutes, I mist them again, and then a third time after the same interval. I do this as the very LAST step in my mounting before drying and once sprayed, they must be brushed completely out if you're not satisfied. If you try anything after that first misting, you're asking for trouble.
Could it be, you are pushing the wire down inside the tail, stretching it to long, it is not going to fluff up if that is the case, you have taken the fluff out.
Hi i found on another site that u can also put silicone up in the tail? have any of you used this technique, if so does it work well. And is very easy to do? thanks Dave
the squirrels prior to mounting? If so cut the the tail off and remove the bone as usual and preserve it then sew it back on when you mount. I have never been able to get a squirrel tail to fluff back out after it had been frozen. I use 20 mule team borax on squirrels. Hope this helps.

Hi David, I tan the squirrel with ez-100 and just backbrush and air blow it like George says. I also mold a tail from the original tail. You must keep backbrushing and air blowing for a couple of days until dry. Good luck.
