I picked up a beautiful road killed skunk today. I used some good ole insence while skinning and never cut open a scent gland so that was a plus. Anyway I have no trapping background or much for rug experience. Whats my next steps? Also I left his toes in thats ok right? Is this something I should send away to have it soft tanned or can I do it myself? I have tanning cream that I use for deerheads but it dries skin hard will that work on a skunk. Finally is this something I should use the miniflesher on after tanning?

Turn the ears and lips and salt heavily. I would send it to a tannery.

I missed a great looking roadkill skunk this week. White with just a few black markings on its head and back, totally reveresed. I found it on about day three or it would have been skinned.

Skunks everywhere!

Can't believe the number of roadkilled skunks around here! I believe it's breeding season, but judging by the number of kills, it's a wonder there's any left TO breed! Whew! Cough! Cough! =)

The cheapest I could find on the net to tann a skunk was 45$. Anyone know of any tanneries cheaper. Preferably in the midwest. Also do I need to be salting this guy or can I let him air dry?

What part of (Turn the ears and lips and salt heavily. )

The first part of my post above.

What part of salt heavily do you not understand?

"Few, if any, reputable tanneries will accept air dried skins. There are good reasons for salt drying hides and it behooves you to follow their request. Bite the bullet, buy the salt, pay the price, and you'll be happy with the results. Doing taxidermy work for oneself can get expensive fast if you want good quality stuff. It's just the price of doing business."

Didn't you see that between the lines?!?!? LMAO
