Repairing Fox Ear

Submitted by Lance on 03/23/2004 at 07:02. ( ) 206.159.166.76

I've got a dry tanned fox skin that has an ear split. I was wondering if it is ok to rehydrate this area to do the repair and to let dry again. Any help will be appriciated.
Thanks Lance!

Lance, Sure, soak the ear in cool water 20 minutes, wrap it up in a bag, lay in refrigerator over night, next day sew it up with thin fishing line and small needle. Enjoy, Aaron H.

why use fishing line?

i was told that one should use nylon thread instead of fishing line. im guessing that this doesnt matter. whats the difference?

nylon thread vs fishing line for sewing

Just another example of "more than one way". Taxidermy is done in so many correct ways, fine fishing line is my preference but you could make the repair with cotton thread or even glue, or bondo, or apoxie-sculpt, or epoxy, or........ Keeping an open mind in taxidermy methods and trying other ways is how good taxidermists become masters of the art/craft. Enjoy, Aaron H.
