Can you use borax to dry preserve a squirrel skin?

You can use borax to insure no bug infestation after the hide drys in a natural state OR, you can use DP to preserve the hide with alum and talc while the borax keeps the bugs away. There IS a difference.
I have had furbuyers that recommend borax on skins that are being dried. Especially in the feet and ear areas where it is hard to get the air circulating.
However, taxidermists prefer salt. Borax seems to speed the drying process.
Borax is probably OK if you just want to dry a skin to hang on the wall. Not so good if the skin is going to be mounted.
Can you DP with just alum?
