Preserving a beaver's tail

Submitted by Tracy on 05/10/2004 at 13:58. ( ) 207.65.44.56

I am a lab teacher, and a student has given me a frozen beaver's tail. I would like to preserve it so I can place it on display. I don't know where to begin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

There may be a easier way than this but this is what I do. I tan many tails each year that I resell. I split the tail around the edges then skin the tail into 2 halves then skin out the inside as best you can. After this I use a electric fillet knife to flesh down to the tail skin as close as I can. Then I salt to dry for 48 hours then change salt and leave for at least 1 week. Then I pickle w/ a saftee acid pickle for at least 3 days. After the pickle I flesh again this time using a fleshing machine but you could get by w/ a fillet knife. After I have finished shaving I return it back to the pickle for several days. After that I use a tan called EZ100 I leave them in there for a couple days then take out and dry. You might be able to skin that tail out all from the bottom side just inside of the outside edge so after its tanned you could maybe fill the inside again so it would look more like a real tail?
Sounds like it would be alot easier to just keep a pet beaver around the place huh.
If you have any Q's just post back
Good Luck
