Hey everyone, I just got a Hog Cape in and since it is the first hog I will be mounting, was wondering about the thickness if the hide. Does most this 3/4" of skin have to be removed prior to tanning. I guess what I am asking is, will it have to be shaved like a Deer Cape? Will I need a Mechanical Flesher to do this? It is really thick. Thanks for all your help.

You will need to take as much of the flesh and fat off your cape
as possible, go to the golf ball look or the blues(blue looking
skin) but don"t cut into the hair roots. You can do this with a razor sharp butcher knife and if the side shields are really thick I use a carpenters draw knife that I have honed razor sharp. After all is fleshed you need to degrease the cape.
Should I flesh it after pickling it? Or before? Thanks for all you help.
