My black bear rug measures 6' from nose to tail. How do I determine the square footage of the bear?
Thanks

L X W in feet = sq. ft.
that hunters refer to is the measurement taken on a skinned bear skin.
The skin is layed on a flat surface and all wrinkles are pulled out. The length is taken from the nose to the end of the skin of the tail. The width is taken from front claw tip across the skin to the opposing paw and measured again to the tip of the longest claw. The two measurements are added together and divided by two....giving you a squared size.......i.e.......6 foot long and 7 foot two inches wide..equals a 6 foot 7 inch squared bear.
Some people really stretch the hide when taking the length and stretch it again for the biggest width. This is an exgerrated size and gets taxidermist in trouble all the time. I measure each bear hide when received and record these two measurements......whether raw, salted and wet or salt dried. Reference is sometimes worth quit a bit in cases like this.
Always subtract at "least" two feet from whatever a guide says.
i thimnk some people go by small, med, large, ex large ect.
but what criteria constitutes these labels
