i heard of people using terms like small med,and large, ect. when charging for bear rugs.
what is the criteria as far as sizes would each term.
obviously it will differ for each species of bear
does anyone else use this method in their shop
would they care to elaborate in a little detail
my thoughts are that it would be easier that doing the linear foot
because of shrinkage. i realize you can sttretch it all back, but you wouldnt have to worry about exact numbers this way

I charge by the foot. And round it off at the 6 inch mark. a 5 foot 8 inch bear would be charged as a 5 1/2 foot rug wile a 5 foot 10 inch would be a 6 foot bear. Remember that if you send your hides out to be tanned. They will charge you by the inch. Stretching the hide is imperative to achieve the proper dimension. If a hide is not stretched. It will more often than not loose a great deal of width. and will not square out properly. After it is rugged it is simple to determine the length by laying the rug out and measuring. By doing it this way. You encourage yourself to give the customer the most you can.
John I charge $150.00 per foot nose to tail. Get your clients to measure nose to tail on carcase, then add 6" in lenght for a rug.
*** When thawing bears always hang them up by a paw and let the
weight of the hide open it up

$180.00 per lineal foot, measured on the completed bear rug, nose to tail over the spinal direction. We also break it down to the inch....so if a bear is 4 feet 4 inches....we charge 180 x 4=720 and plus 4 inches (@ $15.00 per inch)it comes to 720 + 60 = $780.00....plus skinning and fleshing (55). When measured like this we've never had a client complain they were charged for a 6 foot bear when it was only 5'9". They only pay for what they have.
WOW 180.00 per foot! Does a guy get a "reach around" for that price?
