I was just noticing some people who wanted to buy baby coons for "pets". Is it even legal to possess, let alone sell coons like that.

Depends on which state you live in and their laws reguarding wild animal pets.
I'm in TN and the last thing they told me was, you cannot keep any native wild animals. No I dont' mean that you caught wild, but almost anything originally from here. Some of them, bobcats, you have to have a permit and a while back I looked into them again and they had upped the standards..permit AND test or proof that you did know how to take care of the animal in particular, not just a cat, or whatever.
I was also told, by a vet., that a lot of people find babies abandoned, perhaps they just shot Moma, and they would take them in and raise until 1 year old. At one year, they had to be free to come and go as they pleased. So you took care of the babies for a year, and normally they don't leave.
And I'm not sure, but I think it is legal in IL/IN one of those. I saw a baby that had come from there.
Well i apologize for my laziness. I was just trying to shortcut and get an easy answer. I kept searching til i found a nice site.

Thanks Griz, I appreciate your sharing the information.
In NC it is leagal-we had one for about 4 years. We got her from a friend that was a Highway Patrolman. I DO miss "Bandit", but we sent her home with my husbands Uncle. She has about 5 acres to range on-with access to her own "apartment"(full basement), regular feeding times, training sessions, and plenty of personal attention from the Uncle and Aunt. She also has a mate & has had a couple of babies, and full Vet care.-Susan
P.S.- She still loves a weekly ride in the Uncle's (mint condition) 1969 Ford pick-up truck. -Susan
